The Balanced Sheet: Auditing Your Whole Life Like a CFO

A CFO's Tool Repurposed for Your Whole Life. Because You Deserve the Same Rigor You Give Your Work.

You can't correct what you can't see. The Balanced Sheet shows you everything.
In my career as a CFO, one of the most important tools I used was the balance sheet. A snapshot of a company's health at a single point in time. Assets, liabilities, equity. Everything laid out clearly so you could see where you stood.
It occurred to me that we never do this for our own lives.
We track our company's performance with rigorous precision. Quarterly reviews, annual reports, KPIs for every department. But the life that produces all of that performance? We let it run on autopilot. We assume that if the external metrics look good, we must be fine.
The Balanced Sheet changes that. It's a tool I developed by adapting the same analytical rigor I used as a CFO and applying it to the full picture of your life. Not just your career. Your energy, your relationships, your health, your purpose, your joy. All of it, visible at a glance.
This is Your Self's language. Numbers, assessment, measurement. It's the tool your intellect already knows how to use. The difference is what we're measuring.
How It Works
The Balanced Sheet is a snapshot assessment. You rate key areas of your life on a scale, honestly, without judgment. Career satisfaction. Energy levels. Relationships. Health. Creative expression. Spiritual connection. Time for yourself. Financial security. Sense of purpose.
You rate each one based on where you actually are, not where you think you should be. This distinction matters. Your Self will want to rate things the way they look from the outside. The Balanced Sheet asks how they feel from the inside.
Every assessment you make is valid. However you rate your energy, your time, your sense of purpose. All of it is true for you right now and absolutely okay. You are not trying to get a gold star. You are trying to let your layers speak and show you their knowing.
When you see it all laid out, patterns emerge. Perhaps your career satisfaction is high but your energy is depleted. Perhaps your financial security is solid but your creative expression is starving. Perhaps your relationships look fine on paper but your sense of genuine connection is low.
These patterns are your layers speaking. Your Self may have been managing the career and financial columns brilliantly while Your Soul's columns go unattended. The Balanced Sheet makes the imbalance visible.
What It Reveals
The power of the Balanced Sheet is in what it shows you about the relationship between columns.
A client who rated her career satisfaction at 9 out of 10 also rated her energy at 3 and her relationships at 4. Her intellect saw a successful career. The Balanced Sheet showed the cost of that success. She was depleting every other area of her life to feed one column.
A balanced Balanced Sheet is not one where every category scores a 10. If you set your bar all the way to the right for every item, it would tip right over. You are not striving for perfection. You are striving for honest awareness of where you actually are. That awareness is the foundation everything else builds on.
Min's Story
Min was late fifties and a high school English teacher. He liked working with students, especially those who were ESL. But conflict with administration and colleagues colored every workday. The stress followed him home, a constant weight on his shoulders.
His belongings satisfaction was high. He and his partner were financially secure. But he was unsatisfied with his energy, his time, his happiness, and his ability to garden and play golf. His Balanced Sheet was out of balance.
Min was offered an early retirement package from his school. It would be a smaller yearly amount than if he waited several more years, but it was available now. He and his partner were financially secure, so he took it. He would have time to garden and golf year-round. He found part-time work three mornings a week teaching English to ESL students.
Some days still tipped toward financial anxiety, but most weeks he woke without dread. He could breathe again. His Self found fulfillment in continuing to teach. His Soul got the outdoor time and energy it craved. His Source connected to meaning through teaching disadvantaged students. All three layers finally had what they needed.
The Balanced Sheet gave him clarity he'd lacked for years. He finally understood what needed to shift and why.
Important Principles
There's no need to pressure yourself. Your Self may want to take all of this on as a challenge to excel, and may pressure you to work harder, make more changes, and push until you are overwhelmed. You can downshift into Your Soul to hear what really matters.
Allow yourself to be flexible. Allow yourself to change. Nothing stays the same. What you wanted two weeks ago may not be what you want today. Your situation at work may be drastically different next month than it is now. You are never going to perfectly balance everything all the time. Enjoy the direction the wind blows, go with the tides, and let the clouds carry you. You're meant to change and grow and experience different things.
Strive for balance, not perfection. If you continue to think about where you want to go and how you can honor all of your layers, you will stay on track.
Start Here
Give yourself ten minutes. Write down the key areas of your life. Career. Energy. Health. Relationships. Creative expression. Spiritual connection. Time for yourself. Financial security. Sense of purpose. Add any categories that matter specifically to you.
Rate each one on a scale of 1 to 10. Be honest with yourself. No one sees this but you.
Then step back and look at the whole picture. Where are you thriving? Where are you starving? Which columns has Your Self been managing brilliantly? Which columns have Your Soul and Your Source been trying to get your attention about?
You now have a snapshot. Not of your career. Of your life. This is where the real work begins.
When you can see your imbalance clearly, you stop wondering why everything feels so hard. You finally have a map. And maps show you the way forward.
Does this resonate with where you are right now? Did your Balanced Sheet responses surprise you?
The Balanced Sheet you just drew is your own. If you want a guided version of the same snapshot, the Career Alignment Assessment takes about five minutes. It shows you which of your three layers has been leading and which has been starving for your attention. Not a grade. A map. You can take the Career Alignment Assessment whenever the timing feels right.
